This study aims to explore the effects of non-invasive brain stimulation, such as transcranial electric stimulation (tES) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), for treating neurological conditions that result from hyperexcitability (excess activity) in different areas of the brain.

The following conditions are eligible for this research:

  • Cerebellar Hyperexcitability
  • Central Pain
  • Phantom Limb Syndrome
  • Alien Limb Syndrome
  • Tinnitus

If you have one of the listed conditions, subsequent eligibility is determined by the following:

  • Ages 18-90
  • Symptoms must be lasting more than one month, resulting in loss of ability to perform daily functions (such as difficulties at work, or causing psychological distress), resistant to medical therapies, and the patient must be unable to tolerate the side effects of existing medical therapies.
  • Relevant medical records may also be reviewed to ensure eligibility.

You may be ineligible for this research if the following apply:

  • Epilepsy or a family history of epilespy
  • Any medical condition or medication that may increase the risk of seizure including tricyclic antidepressants and neuroleptics
  • Pacemaker or other implantable medical device
  • Metal in the skull, not including the mouth
  • Unstable cardiac pulmonary, or other systemic illness (heart disease, liver disease, etc)
  • Pregnancy
  • Children or adolescence
  • Bipolar disorder due to the risk of mania
  • History of depression or suicidality
